I need a concensus from you guys. Do I keep doing the NMM method on my Warmachine, or do I stick to the standard metallic paints? Please post reasoning and discussion on this topic. Thanks.
For those who don't know NMM is an abbreviation of Non-Metallic Metal. It's a method used to emulate the shiny-ness of metal on a 3d miniature model but without using metallic paint. Unfortunately, my paltry attempt at NMM resulted in a flashy shading of brownish-yellow, as seen in the picture above. All you non-Warhammerers, non-Warmachinists, non-miniature hobbyists can comment, too.

emp: baket? ok naman ah. yung gold mo ayos kaya lang yung mga silver(?) na areas mukhang bato.
+++ Yun exactly yung problema sa NMM eh. Kelangan merong distinction between colors. The gold tends to look like brown, or muddy yellow; and the silver looks like drab grey or stone.
Garr, you're right. I didn't see it that way. Thanks. I will try to improve on my methods.
^_^
mukhang ok naman yung shading ah. ang effect e parang tarnished gold which is shiny on most part and "dirty" on the corners. parang lumang metal ang dating.
Thanks. I'll improve more on my NMM.
Obi, having a theme is nice, pero this one you can build from the starter box, too:
• Stryker
• Ironclad
• Charger
• Lancer
• Eiryss - mercenary, good for assassinating enemy warcasters
• Journeyman Warcaster - parang must for any Cygnaran
• Stormblades (8) - 5 troopers, 1 sergeant, 1 officer and 1 standard bearer
That's 499 points. Starter box would cost you P2,200. Eiryss around P440. Journeyman P440. Storm Blades lahat-lahat na around P2,700. And that brings you to P5780. Playable and competitive na. Wala ka nga lang Long Gunners, pero mas makakamura ka naman. You can add them on later.
hmmm... pretty interesting list sir! iL take note of this one and after reading more of Prime and Escalation, iL sure come up with what list iL stick with. di ko pa din kasi alam ang rules with mercs... & there's a lotsa cooL figs on the mercenary line.
sir kim, baka may pdf ka na ng prime? ;) hehe.
WM Mercs are alright, except that there are many in-faction abilities that can't be shared with contractual mercs and vice versa.
I myself am looking at Magnus the Traitor and the Ogrun Bokur, and of course Eiryss and Boomhowler. Pero siguro after my first 1000 points na siguro yun.
ah the Magnus fig rockz. \m/
parang konti lang mercs na pede sa cryx.
pero pwede naman yata i dark seduction si eirys e. =p
Getting mercs is tempting, although I suggest stick to playing in-faction first. Mercs don't get the benefits of some of warcaster feats, special abilities, etc.
With Escalation, open na naman ang option to build a mercenary army hehe
your NMM is fine. i suggest you continue and improve on it. we all have to start somewhere. not too many painters out there are gutsy enough to even try. ;)
gold is brownish in color. take a good look at citadel's shining gold. here's my formula in Citadel paints: start with bestial brown and move up to orange, from there grade it to bubonic brown and then for the lightest parts only, grade to yellow. always end your highlights with a tiny proportion of yellow added to white. use the finest brush you can get for that part.
your silver/metal is fine. you just need to put more contrast and have intense highlights as well. maybe 15%gray and 85%white.
here's a tip that might help you differentiate your colors. metals have shiny surfaces therefore the contrast of light on them will always be more dramatic than on other surfaces like cloth etc...
good luck and keep the great looking figs coming. ;)
Thanks for the nice words, Salubri. I tried to put some battle damage, but it doesn't come out right. It tends to look like camo design instead of battle damage.
I'll try to put some more work into it.
Can I have a look at the models you've painted? ^_^
you already have kim. it's me. ryan. :P
Ryan! Nice one! Welcome to blogging! ^_^
